A really tremendous town in the east of Srinagar is a beautiful and attractive tourism spot. Kargil is the centre of purig, now known as suru river valley. After Leh, Kargil is the second largest town in Ladakh. It is surrounded by forts. The word khar means castle and rkil means centre which together forms castle centre. Kargil is the centre place. A must visit place. It is the best destination to visit during summers. Hills and valleys over there are really charming. The city also shows you the insight how Indian army fought the impossible. It is also the joint capital of the union territory of Ladakh. In 1947-48 when the first Kashmir war was fought with Pakistan, seperated the Ladakh wazarat and due to which Kargil and Leh tehsils were left on Indian side and the skardu tehsils on the Pakistan side. Here the Kargil war was fought in 1999 when there was an infiltration by Pakistani forces. The Battle was fought for a few months and at the end Pakistani forces were forced to withdraw from there.
The main language spoken over there is Purig. Tourists can also hear the Shina, Balti, Ladakhi, Urdu, Hindi and English language over there. Among all the population, scheduled tribes are found there the most. It is a beautiful destination for tourists to enjoy.
